The two primary types of optical fiber cables are single mode and multi mode. Duplex cable has two fiber optic cables and it usually has two connectors on each end. The suitability of each type for a particular application depends on the fiber optic cable s characteristics. Single mode cable is designed to carry a single signal source with low transmission loss over great distances.

Fiber optic communication equipment typically sends data in one direction on a cable. The single and multimode step index fiber cables are the simpplest types of fiber optic cables.
